Das Metroon 

Die Hygiene in Olympia ist vor allem während der Festspiele  in einem Ausmaß beklemmend gewesen, dass der Ort deswegen immer wieder sarkastischer Kritik ausgesetzt war. Auf dem relativ kleinen Bereich des Heiligen Bezirks drängten Tausende Menschen und Tiere. Der Lärm und der Geruch waren beachtlich. Es wurden ungezählte Opfertiere geschlachtet, mitunter einhundert Rinder auf einem Mal (Hekatomben). Ihr Blut floß in Strömen. Der dem Zeus geheiligte Brandopferaltar, eines der archaischen Kernheiligtümer Olympias, befand sich inmitten des Heiligen Hains. Der Geruch des Blutes vermischt mit dem Geruch brennenden Fleisches und der beißende Qualm des Opferfeuers verbreite sich über die Begrenzungen des Heiligen Hains hinaus.

Zur Befriedigung hygienischer Bedürfnisse  standen keine von der Archäologie explizit erkannten Einrichtungen zur Verfügung. Allein das blutige Geschäft an den mehr als sechzig Opferaltären verlangte nach Gelegenheiten und Möglichkeiten rascher Reinigung.

Ich habe mich daher bemüht darzustellen, wie ein öffentlich zugängliches Brunnenhaus im baulichen Ambiente Olympias ausgesehen haben könnte. Vorlagen gab es durchaus an anderen Orten und man wird auch durchaus davon ausgehen dürfen, dass es auch in Olympia derartige Einrichtungen gegeben hat. Außerdem weist die Archäologie teils offene, teils überdeckte Dränagen-Kanäle unterhalb der Schatzhausterrasse nach, die Regenwasser sammelten und von Westen nach Osten abführten. Es ist anzunehmen, dass sie genutzt werden konnten.

Hence, I have tried to show how a publicly accessible pump room could have looked in the architectural ambience of Olympia. There were presentations absolutely at other places and one will also be allowed to assume absolutely from the fact that there have been such facilities also in Olympia. Moreover, the archeology proves partly open, partly covered drainage canals below the treasure house terrace which rainwaters collected and led away from the west to the east. It is to be supposed that they could be used.

L'hygiène dans Olympia a été en oppressant, avant tout, pendant les festivaux dans des dimensions que le lieu était abandonné ainsi sans cesse à la critique sarcastique. L'autel de victime de feu geheiligte à Zeus, l'un des sanctuaires principaux archaïques d'Olympia, se trouvait au milieu du saint bosquet. L'odeur du sang mélange avec l'odeur de la viande brûlant et la fumée épais mordant du feu de victime se répand au-delà des restrictions du saint bosquet.

A la satisfaction des besoins hygiéniques, aucune institution explicitement reconnue par l'archéologie n'était à la disposition. Seul le commerce sanglant à plus de soixante autels de victime exigeait après des occasions et possibilités du nettoyage rapide.
C'est pourquoi, je me suis efforcé de représenter, comme une maisonnette de source accessible en public pourrait avoir parue dans l'ambiance architecturale d'Olympia. Il y avait des présentations absolument aux autres lieux et on pourra partir aussi absolument de ce qu'il y a eu les institutions pareilles aussi dans Olympia.
